چکیده

Sik,?I publish the following cases as I believe them to be quite unusual. Case /.?A sepoy of the 33rd Sikhs was stung in the axilla at about 8 p.m. on 1st September. In about one minute he fell down in a semi-conscious condition and was immediately carried to hospital on a charpoy. On arrival he was pale and somewhat cyanosed, was sweating, the pupils were contracted and the extremities were cold. The respiration was shallow and sighing and the pulse 130 or 140 irregular, and barely perceptible. He was treated with strychnine, hot water bottles, etc., and the pulse soon became regular and stronger, but he remained cyanosed and complained of a tightness in the throat for about 14 hours A slight oedema of the eyelid and face developed also. At 10-30 he had a short but severe rigor at the end of which his temperature was 101*4.

Geographic Variation of Melanisation Patterns in a Hornet Species: Genetic Differences, Climatic Pressures or Aposematic Constraints?

Coloration of stinging insects is often based on contrasted patterns of light and black pigmentations as a warning signal to predators. However, in many social wasp species, geographic variation drastically modifies this signal through melanic polymorphism potentially driven by different selective pressures. To date, surprisingly little is known about the geographic variation of coloration of s...

Wasp venom is appropriate for immunotherapy of patients with allergic reaction to the European hornet sting.

AIM To identify whether it is the yellow jacket (Vespula germanica) or European hornet (Vespa crabro) venom that induces sensitization in patients with IgE-mediated allergic reaction to the venom from the sting of a European hornet. Since these patients usually have positive skin tests and specific IgE to all vespid venoms, it would be useful to distinguish cross-reactors from non-cross-reactor...

Film formation and structural characterization of silk of the hornet Vespa simillima xanthoptera Cameron.

We extracted silk produced by the larva of the hornet Vespa simillima xanthoptera Cameron from its nest. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis of the extracted hornet silk showed four major components with molecular weights between 35 and 60 kDa. The main amino acid components of the hornet silk protein were Ala (33.5%), Ser (16.9%), Asp (8.5%) and Glu (8...

Identification of four major hornet silk genes with a complex of alanine-rich and serine-rich sequences in Vespa simillima xanthoptera Cameron.

Hornet silk, a fibrous protein in the cocoon produced by the larva of the vespa, is composed of four major proteins. In this study, we constructed silk-gland cDNA libraries from larvae of the hornet Vespa simillima xanthoptera Cameron and deduced the full amino acid sequences of the four hornet silk proteins, which were named Vssilk 1-4 in increasing order of molecular size. Portions of the ami...

Purification and some physical properties of a chymotrypsin-like protease of the larva of the hornet, Vespa orientalis.

A chymotryps in l ike endopeptidase has been purif ied by ion-exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, and gel f i l tration. The enzyme preparation is homogeneous in the u l t r a centrifuge and disc electrophoresis. The enzyme is proved to be free f rom any other proteolytic activities. The molecular weight of the proteinase as determined w i t h several techniques (ultracentrifugati...
